On April 16, 2011, 51 tornadoes tore through Virginia, leaving 10 people dead and more than 100 injured. The F3 twister that passed through Hampton Roads killed 3 people, damaged or destroyed 167 structures, and caused an estimated $7.7 million in damage in Gloucester County alone. Join John Billet and Bill Sammler of the National Weather Service Office in Wakefield as they review the history of tornadoes in Virginia, explain the conditions that favored last year's deadly outbreak, describe how they gauged the storms' intensity, and discuss tornado preparedness.
