Eric Robinson '11 recently published a series that explores new data on nighttime lighting in Xinjiang to systematically investigate China’s efforts to reeducate and detain its Uyghur and ethnic minority populations. Coupled with satellite imagery, this analysis reveals systematic evidence of the coordinated growth of detention facilities since 2016, and a growing focus on prison facilities, more so than reeducation centers, that continues unabated despite Chinese claims to have decommissioned many facilities.
