Abstract: Breathing is controlled by a network of brainstem neurons that collectively generate respiratory rhythm and pattern, and directly control activity of respiratory muscles. While inspiration is always an active process driven by rhythmogenic neuronal network in the preB?tzinger Complex, expiration is passive during restful breathing but becomes active during exercise and increased respiratory drive. The source of rhythmic drive to expiratory muscles has been postulated to be generated in the brainstem, at the level of the parafacial respiratory group (pFRG). I will present work from our laboratory that aims to characterize physiological properties and state dependent modulation of the expiratory oscillator, the pFRG, across development and in adulthood.
