In the face of globalization and transitional media saturation, many nations have become concerned about the loss of their traditional cultures and languages. One hundred forty eight nations (not including the USA) have ratified the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage enacted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Many countries have started local and national projects to "preserve" or "safeguard" certain musical traditions based on the guidelines of the 2003 Convention.

Dr. Seeger examines this program and addresses the practical and ethical issues involved in preserving or safeguarding musical traditions. Come prepared to join him in a song and discussion about this challenging issue.

This lecture is sponsored by the Department of Music and the Music in American Culture Series (MACS).
