Niyati Dhokai completed her Ph.D. at University of Alberta in 2012. Her research was conducted in Gujarat, India, where she was based as a Fulbright scholar in 2009 - 2010. In 2012 - 2013, she held a postdoc at Grant MacEwan University. She has presented her research at conferences of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the International Council for Traditional Music. Her research has been published in the International Journal for Music Education and is forthcoming in The Oxford Handbook of Social Justice and Music Education and the Journal of Folklore Research. Her current research involves expanding her interests in social and cultural effects of music by working as a music instructor and ethnomusicologist in a community-based rehabilitation program with participants recovering from brain injury.
