Oceanic Borderlands, Contraband and Silver: How Early Trade Networks to South America Jump-Started the U.S. National Economy

Early nineteenth-century trade networks across the Americas wrought profound effects throughout the Western hemisphere. With ready access to South American silver — then the global currency — the United States laid the foundation of a national economy, a banking system, westward expansion and reaching out to China and India. This is a tale of bold capitalism, cross-border dynamics, contraband trade and corruption, as the United States takes its first steps onto the world stage.

Alumni, parents, family and friends are welcome to join. Time will be available for Q&A.

About Professor Prado:

For his current book manuscript, Professor Prado is researching the social and commercial networks linking New England to the Rio de la Plata region in South America during the last decades of colonial rule in Latin America.
