Elena will give a short presentation and Q/A on the origins of privacy and blockchain through the lens of Constitutional law.

The United States Constitution has no set provision on individual privacy. Often in the United States, privacy is not talked about as a positive right. However, with the arrival of Big Tech in Washington, individuals have started to experience the effects of Big Tech's intrusion. Often the refrain is, if a product is "free" like Facebook, you the consumer are the product being sold.

Data privacy and digital rights are still not clearly understood as a positive right in policy to fight for in the U.S. This comes at a particularly important juncture in policy, with the rise in popularity of privacy enhancing technology like end-to-end encryption messaging applications (such as Telegram and Signal). Elena will discuss how policymakers should write digital privacy rights, talk about her work on Zcash (the blockchain-based privacy token), and how individuals can take control of their digital right to privacy.
