[PAST EVENT] Professor Aliaksandr Kalbaska lecture "University in Exile: Fiction or Reality?"
October 12, 2012
3pm - 4pm
University in Exile: Fiction or Reality in the Modern Landscape of Higher Education?
European Humanities University was founded in Minsk in 1992 as an alternative to Soviet-style higher education and a model of the liberal arts approach. In the early 2000's, EHU came under enormous pressure from Belarusian authorities to conform to requirements that would undermine academic freedom and infuse educational programs with state ideology. For resisting this assault, EHU was forcibly closed in 2004. It has since relocated to Vilnius with the support and assistance of the Government of Lithuania, the European Commission, the Nordic Council of Ministers, State Department, foundations, corporations, and individuals in more than a dozen other countries.
