Emile Simpson is the Ernst May Fellow in History and Policy in the International Security Program at Harvard University's Belfer Center. He is the author of War From the Ground Up: Twenty-First-Century Combat as Politics and a columnist for Foreign Policy Magazine, where he has written numerous articles. His work also has been featured in the Financial Times of London and the Guardian. Emile is currently completing a doctorate in the history of international law at King's College London. The doctoral project examines the concept of the enemy in international law, and associated jurisdictional ideas, from the seventeenth century to the present. Emile served in the British Army from 2006-2012 as an infantry officer in the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
