Recent cultural events of the past three tumultuous years have included Pussy Riot's performance, arrest, and trial; filmmaker Andrei Zviagintsev's Oscar-nominated film Leviathan; and a series of clashes of Russia's leading art and research institutions with federal and local authorities. The talk by Professor Nancy Condee,University of Pittsburgh, takes three elements - cultural spectacle, political intervention, and new moral certainty - to engage in a discussion of contemporary Russian cultural politics.
