[PAST EVENT] Lecture: "The European Grand Tour"
April 11, 2011
4pm
This lecture on "The European Grand Tour" will study the manner in which young Englishmen toured major European countries like France and Italy in order to gain an understanding of other cultures and their art forms. The journeys frequently resulted in the transfer of tastes in art and architecture from continental Europe to Britain.
A graduate of Queen's College, Cambridge, Professor Black is Professor of History at the University of Exeter (U.K.). He has written 100 books, many on the topic of 18th-century Britain. He has served on the editorial boards of various journals, including the International History Review and the Journal of Military History, and is a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
His talk is free and open to the public, co-sponsored by the Reves Center for International Studies, the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Department of History, and the Faculty of Arts & Sciences.
