HAB in the York River

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur when large colonies of algae grow out of control and can produce toxins which can be harmful to fish, mammals, birds, and even people! These blooms can be found all over the world but can vary in severity. With the help of VIMS scientists like Marta Sanderson, researchers have begun understanding how and why these blooms happen, which can aid in improving the detection of these blooms and even forecast when they may happen.

Discovery labs are free, family-friendly programs that include activities and a short presentation. Registration is required to attend the live event.
