In the face of climate change, protecting critical marine ecosystems through the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) (“protection”) and sustainable management of blue economy sector activities (“production”) are the two most common and proven marine resource conservation approaches.

MPAs provide refuge to marine organisms, allowing an environment where critical ecosystems and species can replenish and thrive. Sustainable management of blue economy sectors, such as fishing, aquaculture and tourism, and others, reduces the impact of these activities on marine resources. However, marine protection and production have primarily been designed, funded, and implemented separately, missing important scope for synergy in moving towards a blue economy that is better – ecologically and economically – than the exploitive model common in most of the world’s oceans.

To reach global conservation and climate targets, while also securing vital benefits of ocean economic sectors, significant investment is needed in integrated solutions that bring together the best of MPA planning and management with sustainable economic development, in a climate-resilient framework (Protection-Production approach/ “PnP approach”).  

In this seminar, we will explore what follows the sentence “I hope this research would inform policy” in academic papers and demystify the different pathways to marine conservation by focusing on the PnP approach. As a fishery scientist by training, simply knowing how to do fisheries stock assessments as it turns out is not enough to affect change.

About Elle Wibisono:

Elle Wibisono is a Lui-Walton Technical Fellow in Conservation International (CI) where she is focusing on the design and development of the “Protection and Production” approach to marine conservation in the Asia Pacific region. Prior to joining CI, Elle served as a Knauss Marine Policy Fellow at the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation where she provided scientific and technical input on a range of national climate change and fisheries legislation.

Elle holds a Ph.D. in Marine and Fisheries Science and Management from the University of Rhode Island with graduate work focused on the relationship between Marine Protected Areas and demersal fisheries in Indonesia. She also makes fish comics online and published a children’s book, A Snapper Tale, about the diversity of red colored snappers.
