The Sociology Department's Eighth Annual Schmidt Lecture on Technology and Society will be held Friday, April 24th at 3pm in Tucker 127A. The speaker will be Kelly Gates from UC San Diego. This public lecture will examine an emerging area of technical and professional specialization in policing and security: the field of forensic video analysis. This involves novel types of police media labor and expertise, employing digital media technologies borrowed from the domain of creative media production in order to make persuasive claims to truth about visual media. She argues that an unavoidable exchange takes place between evidentiary uses of surveillance video on the one hand, and prevalent forms of surveillant narration found in both fictional and true-crime storytelling.
