Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole is the former director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. She was a pioneer of African-American studies and black women?s studies and made history as the first female African-American president of Spelman College, the oldest historically black women?s college in the country and Bennett College for Women. She is the only person to have served as president of both these two historically Black colleges for women in the United States. She is also Professor Emerita of Emory University from which she retired as Presidential Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Women?s Studies and African American Studies.

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration program pays tribute to the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year?s remembrance is sponsored by the Center for Student Diversity and is part of the yearlong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of African Americans in Residence at William & Mary.
