Biography: Dr. Miki Akiyama is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Information Studies at Keio University. She received a Doctorate of Medicine and a PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University, a Master of Science in Media and Communication Policy and Regulation from the London School of Economics and Political Science, London University. She is currently a visiting scholar of medicine (hygiene and public health), in the advanced life science research institute from 3/2016-3/2017 at UC Berkeley. Her research and teaching seeks to empower citizens in the community through providing places to learn and communicate about health and well-being for palliative and non-palliative care initiatives. Through public health communication activities, she promotes citizens? active participation in their own lives and communities. She also explores uses of information technology to extend the care capabilities of community dwelling elders in the super aging society of Japan. She has authored over 50 scholarly works and is a primary advisor to the Japanese Ministry on the Health Information Technology Promotion task force regarding telemedicine and health economics for designing a more sustainable care systems for Japan.
