[PAST EVENT] The Mafia and the Anti-Mafia Movement in Sicily: A lecture by Professor Anthony Fragola
October 20, 2011
5pm
In addition to his position at UNC-G, Fragola is also a published author of a series of short stories and the director of a number of documentary films about the Anti-Mafia Movement in Sicily. On Thursday, he will be speaking about two of his documentaries, A Beautiful Memory: A Mother and her Sons Against the Mafia and Responsible Tourism: Corleone, Sicily. Professor Fragola's documentary, A Beautiful Memory, features a guided tour of the landscape of the life of Giuseppe (Peppino) Impastato, an Anti-Mafia youth activist and Sicilian radio personality, murdered by the mafia in 1978 at the age of 30. This documentary also features the last recorded interview with his passionate, anti-Mafia mother, the late Felicia Bartolotta Impastato (1916-2004). His recent documentary, Responsible Tourism: Corleone, Sicily, at least part of which I believe he will be screening, seeks to dispel the negative stereotypes of Corleone, made infamous by Francis Coppola's adaptation of Mario Puzo's The Godfather. Through the images presented in this documentary the audience will see the incomparable natural and man-made beauty of this land and be enticed to visit Corleone with a new awareness of the rich and diverse experiences that welcome you. For more information about Professor Fragola's work and the anti-mafia movement in Sicily, please visit his website: {{http://anothercorleone.com, Another Corleone: Another Sicily}}.
