Nicolas van de Walle (PhD. Princeton University, 1990) is the Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Government at Cornell University. His primary field is comparative politics. His teaching and research focuses on the political economy of development, with a special focus on Africa; on democratization, and on the politics of economic reform. His book, African Economies and the Politics of Permanent Crisis, 1979-1999 (Cambridge University Press, 2001), was awarded the Gregory Luebbert Book Prize by the American Political Science Association in 2002. He is currently finishing an edited volume that examines the effect of aid on democratic consolidation in Africa.
