Notes on Collective Creation and Teatro La Candelaria:
Collective creation was one of the central methods that defined the New Latin American Theater (El Nuevo Teatro Latinoamericano) movement from the late 1960s through the 1970s, which has strong roots in Colombia. Although its use was widespread among numerous artistic collectives, as a method it presented notable variations. Among those who theorized about their own practice is Santiago García, director of Teatro La Candelaria (1966-2020), based in Bogotá. This talk will address some aspects pointed out by García that give a characteristic tone to the group's creative work (which continues today), seeking to establish comparisons with the practices of other collectives such as Teatro Experimental de Cali (TEC).
Dr. Janneth Aldana holds bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology and a doctorate in history from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. The central themes of her research are cultural sociology and the history of knowledge, especially as related to art. In the context of Colombia and Latin America, she studies the relationship between artistic creation and reception as well as its place in social development. She is Associate Professor (tenured) in the Department of Sociology, within the School of Social Sciences, and a member of the working group on Culture, Knowledge and Society, at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia.
This talk will be in Spanish with live translation to English. It is open to interested students and faculty.
