[PAST EVENT] Lecture: From the Maquilas to the 'Nuevo South': Gender, Borders, & Women's Resistance
October 22, 2014
3:30pm - 5pm
Jennifer Bickham-Mendez will present a lecture titled: "From the Maquilas to the 'Nuevo South': Gender, Borders, and Women's Resistance in an Age of Globalization.
Bickham-Mendez is an associate professor of sociology at W&M. She is a recipient of the 2004 President's Award for Service to the Community and the 2010 Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence. Her scholarly interests have centered on the ways in which political, social and economic structures shape the lived realities and struggles of everyday people under conditions of globalization. Her work has appeared in a variety of academic journals and edited collections.
Her book From the Revolution to the Maquiladoras: Gender, Labor and Globalization in Nicaragua (2005 Duke University Press) received the 2008 Annual Book Award from the Political Economy of the World System Section of the American Sociological Association. Along with Nancy Naples from the University of Connecticut, she is a co-editor of an anthology entitled: Border Politics: Social Movements, Collective Identity, and Globalization, which will be published in October by NYU Press.
In her teaching Bickham Mendez likes to get students out of the ivory tower and into the "real world." Since 2009 she has co-directed a program in border studies in which students and faculty spend a week on the US-Mexico border learning about immigration issues from a variety of different perspectives. She has worked collaboratively with numerous community agencies here in Williamsburg and is currently a member of the board of directors at Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center.
Reves Hall Global Lectures are informal discussions between featured speakers, students, professors and other guest speakers on global affairs. The lectures are free and open to the public.
