Professor Javier Corrales of Amherst College presents the 2017 Boswell Lecture.
After a decade of enormous progress, the struggle for LGBT rights in Latin America is now experiencing a backlash. How have institutions of liberal democracy in the region contributed to the progress so far ? and also to the rise of new forms of homo/transphobia?
Professor Corrales will discuss how religious groups in particular are taking advantage of contemporary political opportunities to block new progress, and conclude with ideas for how best to counter this conservative backlash.
A reception will follow in the lobby outside Ewell Recital Hall.
