[PAST EVENT] What If ISIS Gets Killer Robots?
September 17, 2015
5pm
Information technology is driving rapid increases in the autonomous capabilities of uninhabited systems, from self-driving cars to factory robots, and increasingly autonomous systems will play a significant role in future conflicts as well. Drones have garnered headlines because of their use in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and beyond, but drones are remotely piloted by a human. Should we be worried about weapons beyond the control of people? Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and a litany of scientists have endorsed a ban on killer robots, but is that the right solution? Drawing on his research on military innovation and his experience working in the Department of Defense, Dr. Horowitz will discuss key trends and technologies that will shape the future of warfare, focusing especially on the challenge of autonomous weapons and implications for actors ranging from the United States to the Islamic State.
