"No one was quite ready for how fast China has emerged. Now everyone is trying to understand what sort of China they will be dealing with," said Kristin Forbes of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, describing the "sense of uncertainty" brought about by China's rise.

After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Shanghai World Expo was another international event that has attracted the world's attention. With the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo on April 30, 2010, the world once again turned its eyes to China. This was the first comprehensive World Expo held in a developing country in history.

In this lecture, Professor Zhang will explore Shanghai Expo 2010 as a nationally-owned enterprise, and even take it as a symbol of China's national economy.

This lecture by Zhang Jijiao is co-sponsored by W&M's Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES). Zhang is a Professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS), and Chair of the Commission on Enterprise Anthropology, International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES). The invited talk will be followed by a reception.
