Achieving sustainable and inclusive practices in international development requires robust policies to ensure transformational outcomes, manage risks, and engage stakeholders effectively.

The Institute for Integrative Conservation is pleased to welcome Dr. Jorge Muñoz, former Global Land Policy Specialist of the World Bank to lead this training session that introduces the W&M community to the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). The ESF is a critical tool for guiding sustainable and inclusive practices in Bank-financed projects.

The ESF encompasses ten Environmental and Social Standards (ESS) that the World Bank and its borrowers apply to better manage environmental and social risks, ultimately enhancing development outcomes. The ESF serves as a model for similar frameworks used by other development organizations.

About the Training Session

Dr. Jorge Muñoz played a key role in preparing and launching the ESF in 2018 and ensuring its compliance across a global portfolio of land-related projects at the World Bank. Drawing on his extensive experience, Dr. Muñoz will provide valuable insights into careers related to environmental and social development in international contexts.

The workshop will include an overview of the ESF, with several examples, and will provide career guidance for aspiring environmental and social specialists, especially those seeking global scale or international careers. The workshop will have a special focus on the importance of land rights as a cross-cutting theme within the ESF.

Registrants are encouraged to explore the World Bank’s ESF website to familiarize themselves with the standards. The "ESF Fundamentals" online training course (8 hours) is also available and highly recommended for those seeking a deeper understanding.


About Jorge Muñoz 

Jorge A. Muñoz served as the Practice Manager of the Global Land and Geospatial Unit at the World Bank from 2014 to 2021, where he supervised the bank's land administration portfolio, with commitments amounting to $1.2 billion. His journey with the Bank began in 1998, during which he dedicated himself to community-driven rural development, land policy reforms and land administration projects in over 20 countries worldwide, predominantly in Africa and Latin America. Among his numerous roles, he held the position of Head of the Bank’s regional office in Recife, Brazil, for two years. Additionally, he represented the Bank in multiple global partnerships, serving as a pivotal figure in related discussions. Dr. Muñoz was born and raised in Bolivia. He holds a B.S. in Engineering from Swarthmore College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
